I dropped out of college for 12 hours because I wanted to start a business more than attend school and... my mom talked me out of it ( i.e. I re-enrolled.)
(Note, when I say "YOU" I mean YOU! THE READER! This is DIRECT Communication, not an English class. Now with that, continue.)
The Time: Spring Break 2020
The Place: Student Housing
I dropped out of school because I was wanting to deeply focus on business endeavors i.e. selling merch, building a system to make it easier on clients for the graphic design services I offer (more on that in another post.) etc. I was happy with the freedom I got with an extra week of Spring break due to the pandemic and I felt as though I didn't want to go back. So, I dropped out for 12 hours.
In that time period, I studied business related articles, worked on demo ideas for future business I could created and relished in my freedom.
The Pros:
Got a LOT done
Felt Free
Could focus on one thing instead of 5 different subjects with deadlines
Could set my schedule
Cons:
Feelings of guilt that I dropped out without telling my family
I ended up telling my mom later that day, and naturally she wasn't too happy and pretty much told me to reenroll and that it wasn't much longer. Which it wasn't, it was my 2nd to final semester (and as of writing this post I did graduate!)
That taste of freedom though, inspired me. I got a chance to feel early what it'd be like to really work for myself. If you're still in college and you have a business idea thats already making a profit and you wish to drop out to focus on making money, by all means feel free. However, if it's merely a drive and you don't have much longer to go. Hold on. Finish. Why? Because thats what it's going to take to start a business: a stick-to-it attitude, determination, and a will to succeed. (I also recommend taking a class in sales and or getting a book on the subject to read in your spare time.)
